TOWN HALL
FOR CONGRESSMAN JOHN MCGUIRE
Saturday, April 26th, 3-4:30pm
Martin Luther King, Jr. Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School
Representative John McGuire (VA-05) hasn't held a town hall or taken constituent questions in person since he was elected. But people have a lot of questions for him--about DOGE's firings of hardworking Federal workers, about the tariffs that will raise prices for all of us, about illegal deportations, and about his and Elon Musk's efforts to gut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
So we invited him to attend a town hall in Charlottesville on April 26, and we're going to hold it whether he comes or not. Join us, and bring your questions for McGuire and the Republicans who are running Washington for their billionaire buddies.
We also sent McGuire a questionnaire - you can read it below. He never responded, of course.

Tariffs
The Constitution gives Congress, not the presidency, the power to impose tariffs, except in emergencies. President Trump’s sweeping tariffs are already crushing the American economy and raising prices for all of us. Even your fellow Republicans in Congress and the Senate have introduced a bill to make sure Congress has to approve any tariffs imposed by the president. Will you vote for this bill to put Congress back in charge of tariffs?
Medicaid
The Republican budget blueprint that you support in Congress requires the committee overseeing Medicaid to cut its budget by $880 billion. That can only be achieved by cutting Medicaid, which 166,000 vulnerable people in your district depend on. At the same time, Congress is planning to grant huge tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. Will you commit to voting against any bill that cuts funding for Medicaid?
Constitutional rights
The constitution requires 'all persons' to have due process of law in the United States. Yet in defiance of direct court orders, President Trump has deported innocent legal residents to prisons in El Salvador. Now he is refusing to obey the Supreme Court itself. Will you vote for a resolution condemning President Trump's unconstitutional actions?
Term limits for presidents
Americans have presidents, not kings. The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution bars any person from being elected President twice, but Donald Trump has signaled his desire to run again, and some of your fellow Republicans in Congress have introduced amendments to allow him to do so. Will you commit to voting against any amendment intended to allow Trump to run again?
National security breaches by senior officials
Senior Trump appointees, including the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State, Vice President, National Security Advisor, and Director of National Intelligence all used the unauthorized text message app Signal to discuss secret military plans while not realizing that a journalist was included on their message thread. Such a security breach could have threatened the lives of American servicemembers. If these were ordinary intelligence officers, they would be stripped of their security clearances or fired. Will you call on President Trump to strip these officials of their clearances and fire them for this egregious breach of security?
Food banks
Many of your constituents depend on hundreds of local food banks and supplemental programs, which rely on Federal funding. The budget resolution before Congress calls for $230 billion in cuts to the committee overseeing these programs. Will you commit to voting against any bill that cuts funding for food banks and food stamps?
Medical research
The University of Virginia receives hundreds of millions in Federal research funding every year. These grants not only produce lifesaving research into curing cancer and other diseases, but are an economic engine for your entire district. The Trump administration has threatened to cut that funding. Can you promise your constituents that none of the research funding for colleges and universities in your district will be cut?
Head Start
The Trump administration is planning to eliminate the Head Start program, which supports early childhood education, healthcare, and food for half a million of America’s most vulnerable children. During the last school year, child care centers in your district got $16 million from the program to care forover a thousand children. Will you promise to vote against any cuts to Head Start funding for your district?
Social Security
At the Social Security Administration, many of the staff who answer the questions of beneficiaries have been indiscriminately fired. This will make it impossible for many of your constituents who depend on Social Security for their livelihoods to initiate claims, correct errors, or change their address or direct deposit information. Americans have paid into Social Security their entire working lives and deserve to have their needs addressed efficiently. Will you promise to vote to repeal any cuts to Social Security’s budget or staff?
DOGE’s illegal access to private information
Member’s of Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency may have violated Federal law by gaining unauthorized access to the private and confidential information that Americans entrusted to many government agencies, including Social Security and the IRS. Can you promise your constituents that if any of their data was illegally taken or stolen by DOGE, you will introduce legislation to hold Musk and DOGE personally accountable?
