Birddog Training with Housing Works

  • Gordon Avenue Library (map)

“Birddogging” is the tactic of putting a policy maker, elected representative, or candidate on the spot, in public and on camera, with inescapable, bullet-proof questions. A birddogger may decide to be perceived as a friend or foe of the politician, and birddoggers may come in groups small or large. This form of simple, direct advocacy is amazingly effective---and yet, astonishingly rare. In 2020’s election year, birddogging is how we will win the policies we need for equity and justice in our community.

Even though politicians like Denver Riggleman have stopped holding town hall meetings out of fear of their own constituents, campaign season has arrived and they must come out in public. Now is the time to learn how to ask your questions in the most effective and compelling way.

Trainer: Elizabeth Deutsch. Elizabeth is the Director of NY State and New England Community Mobilization at Housing Works. She joined the Advocacy Dept. at Housing Works in 2018 after twenty-two years in nursing to use her knowledge of the healthcare system to make effective change in public health policy. She has been an organizer for both federal and local rallies, protests, and non-violent civil disobedience including saving the ACA, fighting the tax scam, and protesting ICE and the Kavanaugh hearings.
